Yup, I did apparently manage to screw this up.
I have a simpler reproducer. Macro packages and PDF are not required.
$ cat tbl-repeating-character.roff
.TS
Lw(10).
\Ra
.TE
.pl \n(nlu
$ /usr/bin/nroff -t tbl-repeating-character.roff # groff 1.22.4
aaaaaaaaaa
$ nroff -t tbl-repeating-character.roff
troff:tbl-repeating-character.roff:3: error: expected identifier, got a
special character
.nr 3bot 0>?0
Yes, that's quite wrong. I'll see about fixing it.
