Yeah, windows really sucks. At the very least it should allow
coexistance of other OSes (it doesn't even allow itself!).

Make a backup floppy. Put grub and your kernel (linux) on it so that
you can boot it if your hard disk gets messed up. (or if you need to
re-install windows and it once agains stomps on the MBR so that you
need to re-install grub). As a side note, don't do any MBR virus
checking from windows because it will think that grub is a virus!
