I neglected to mention that, but yes, WinXP booted just fine from
that partition, until I stuck GRUB in the way :-(. Remember it was
WinXP's choice to put itself into a logical partition --- I had thought
it would create a physical partition, but it didn't. I doubt they'd
have set up the installer to do that if it wouldn't work.
I surmise that perhaps there is some bit of state passed from the
WinXP MBR code to the WinXP chain loader that is essential in the
logical-partition case, but not in the physical-partition case,
and that GRUB doesn't know about.
