Config Problems: Objcopy

I'm trying to build grub .93 under cygwin (win2k).  However, the
configuration ends with the "error: GRUB requires a working absolute
objcopy; upgrade your binutils" message.  I do have cmp in PATH and it is
found.  I have the latest binutils (2.14.90)  and even built 2.10
(recommended by readme) but that didn't fix anything.  How can I fix this?

(The config log is large, so I'll post in on request)
