Details:

An example syntax dash does not recognize is in grub/utils/grus-fs-tester.in

This line: BIGBLOCKCNT=$((16#7fffffff))

Here's an error message when using dash:
   ./grub-fs-tester: 456: arithmetic expression: expecting EOF: "16#7fffffff"
