I put test_extreme_problems() in as an "acid test" for stiff ODE solvers. It includes a few problems that are numerically beyond classical methods. test_extreme_problems() gives some kind of evidence that ode-initval2 has methods that can tackle these kinds of numerical nightmares. It is a good question if those tests are really appropriate for a standard check.
Regarding msbdf decrease-order-by-2 problem, I was unable to find the bug in a reasonable amount of time and energy. I can not reproduce it consistently. Sorry.
