I think that the optimal situation is to use autoconf, however, as
upstream has not been doing it this way, it is better to follow their
model (small is easier to accept and they are going to be maintaining it
anyway). As further evidence, my patch against your code base was a
670k diff. Compare this to my new code against upstream: 106k.
