The 'Makefile' contained 'WORLDOPTS = -k' which was used when running
$ make World
Removing that line or (untested) running
$ make WORLDOPTS=''
solves that problem.
With XFree86 4.4.0 however '-k' was removed from 'WORLDOPTS'.
