Binutils and GCC do not work much differently than on GNU/Linux, except
for some configuration parts. I think it is a prerequisite to
intimately know the GNU/Linux toolchain for that `toolchain maintenance'
task.

I think that is only necessary if you plan to contribute a lot of code
to the Hurd or GNU Mach. For the initial patches, just post the code to
bug-hurd and get it reviewed and applied by one of the maintainers.
