You are giving free() a pointer which was not allocated by malloc. My
guess is that you are giving a pointer to a local variable.

NENTRIES -1 just means no max.
About BUFSIZE, see the doc:
« If the supplied buffer is not large enough to hold the data, it
should be grown. »
i.e. reallocate *data.
