Well, I guess that if linux didn't add eth0 to /dev, that must be
because there is more to it than just read/write (like MAC address
configuration etc).

Sure, since that's a stream of bytes :)
BTW, you still haven't submitted a fixed patch (the list of concerns is
still on the Savannah patch entry).
