It doesn't really matter which one you take, as you're only testing its
HDD detection, and that hasn't been touched for a long time.

Yes, something like that.  But it can be even simpler: boot GRUB, go to
its command line, type in ``kernel (hdwherever)/it/is/gnumach'' and
``boot''.  (If you haven't installed it already, you could even boot GRUB
from a rescue CDROM, for example.)
