Actually, tputs doesn't necessarily write to stdout (the python
binding might need some work, but that's out of scope):

man tputs:

       int tputs(const char *str, int affcnt, int (*putc)(int));
                                              ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ (no stdout)
