_DEFAULT_SOURCE is a (documented) feature of GNU C library.
The configure script checks for this, and adds it to the flags
used for building (including the test-programs) and passes that
into the ".pc" file.

musl doesn't have any noticeable documentation.

none of the systems that I develop on have musl.
(you're free to submit a patch, if you use musl).
