I just noticed this changes the default drive that is select.

If no arguments are given parted will use the last drive instead of the
first.

Would it be better if no device was selected by default if nothing is
parsed as an argument, the user would have to select a device before
doing anything else.

How about getting parted's select command to display a list of devices
to choose from if no argument is given ?
