I just did whatever my intuition told me to make it compile :)

I am not really keen on gettext.  Maybe some incompatibility,
as you was hinting at.  I was indeed using:

gettext             0.10.38-2
autoconf            2.50-8
autoconf2.13        2.13-35
automake            1.4-p4-1
