This is the same error message I got while trying to install Fedora Core 3 
onto one of my two harddrives. I was only able to install fc3 by 
disconnecting power to /dev/hdc and now I cannot access /dev/hdc at all!

I was using parted to try to fix whatever damage was done during the instal.
