in case anyone has the same problem, I will explain
how I solved it -
Boot the Debian sarge installation / rescue disk
When the disk drivers are loaded
ALT-F2 to start a root console
create /mnt
mount -t ext2 /dev/discs/disc0/partx /mnt
cd /mnt/sbin
cp parted /sbin
cd /mnt/lib
cp -i * /lib
Answer N to all overwrites
umount /mnt
parted (it should guess disc0)
(parted) resize 3 4690.854 9193.447
