I have a Dell Precision M4400, which until recently used IRRT sata mode. I noticed that when I started using AHCI, gparted 0.5.2 (0.5.2-2+b1 according to debian; the version avaliable in squeeze and sid) with libparted 2.2 (2.2-5; the version in the squeeze repos) refused to format partitions. When it started, this warning appeared:
WARNING: the kernel failed to re-read the partition table on /dev/sda (Device or resource busy). As a result, it may not reflect all of your changes until after reboot.
When it failed, the same warning appeared in the logs.
Using libparted 1.8.8 (libparted1.8-10; available in the lenny repos) and gparted 0.3.8 (also from the lenny repos), this problem goes away.
