22 of 33 tests failed with 'make check'

    On a SL5.1 (similar to RedHat Enterprise 5) x86_64 system running 
kernel 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5 I unpacked parted-2.2.tar.gz and did

./configure --without-readline; make; make check

resulting in the attached test-suite.log.  I had installed 
readline-6.2.tar.gz, but './configure' still complained "configure: error: 
GNU Readline could not be found..." even though /usr/local/lib contains

libhistory.a   libhistory.so.6    libreadline.a   libreadline.so.6
libhistory.so  libhistory.so.6.2  libreadline.so  libreadline.so.6.2
