[bug-patch] patch-2.6.1.136-31a7 test suite failures: diagnosis for FreeBSD 8.2

The FreeBSD 8.2 tests/*.log files for patch-2.6.1.136-31a7 all have
something like this one:

% cat unmodified-files.log
FAIL: unmodified-files (exit: 2)
================================

eval: ${BASH_LINENO[...}: Bad substitution

I therefore tried this:

% make clean
% ksh
$ make SHELL=/usr/local/bin/ksh all check
...
FAIL: crlf-handling
FAIL: merge
2 of 31 tests failed

Those remaining failures have already been reported for
other BSD flavors.
