By the way, is GNU tar 1.13.90 considered more stable than 1.13.25? Or
should I stick to 1.13.25 on production systems?

Odd; that fix was installed into GNU tar on 2003-07-05, so I'm
surprised that you found the need for it in 1.13.90. Can you
double-check your copy of 1.13.90?
