Two days ago, Sun released their distribution of GNU tar 1.14 as part
of their regular updates to the Solaris 9 software platform. It was
made available as part of Sun patches 118191-01 (sparc), 118192-01
(x86), 118193-01 (sparc source code), and 118194-01 (x86 source code).
The sparc and x86 source code are identical to each other, and to the
GNU tar 1.14 source code; I don't know why Sun ships two copies of the
source code, but I guess it has something to do with their packaging
system.
Sun now installs GNU tar as "/usr/sfw/bin/tar", i.e., as of two days
ago Solaris users no longer have to invoke GNU tar via the name
"gtar", they can use "tar" by setting their PATH appropriately.
Just thought you'd like to know. Job well done and all that.
