Thank you very much, the patch has indeed cured the problem as seen from my
test script. If it doesn't fix my full backup script I'll let you know
tomorrow after the backup script runs tonight.

Just a few questions that are not critical:

Do you know why I do not see this problem with my tar 1.13.25 on RH-8 and
you do see the problem in 1.13.25?

Why does tar 1.15.1 fail "make check"?
  2: decompressing from stdin                  FAILED (pipe.at:50)

Why does Fedora Core 3 put tar in /bin but "make install" puts it in
/usr/local/bin?
