As a few weeks ago, there was a note that GNU tar had problems with sparse
files > 4 GB, I would asume this is a GNU tar problem.
Meanwhile, you could try star
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/star/alpha/
but there is a big chance that your files are lost.
