In general, 2GB was the old file limit (31 bits) on 32-bit machines, and
for newer architectures (either by large file support on 32-bit machines,
or on 64-bit machines), file sizes can be up to 63 bits (more bytes than
you will ever have storage for).  Within tar, there are some smaller
limits; for example, the ustar format is incapable of anything larger than
8GB, because of the way the file size is stored in the tar file.
