Thank you for the answer and the reference.
I hope it can be changed in the future. Instead of optimistically applying
the optimization, and requiring the user to pass an obscure option in the
event of failure, it would be nice if tar could tag archives that satisfy
the DFS requirement, and behave conservatively otherwise.
