Do you see the problem on Solaris 10? If not, it's probably not worth
worrying about it, as older Solaris versions are no longer supported.
If you want to investigate this, please figure out exactly how 'tar' is
being invoked, run 'truss' on that 'tar' (preferably in the C locale),
and let us know what system calls are being issued around the point of
failure.
I will likely write a note on a scrap of paper and then test it on a
Fujitsu SPARC64 server running Solaris 10. On the other hand I may lose
the scrap of paper under a keyboard and then find it again in January.
Really, no real motivation here at all and that makes sense. I just like
having some old SPARC machines running during the winter time.
