Texinfo from Sgml

Hello,

In converting an sgml file to texinfo with a third-party (non-gnu) tool,
I got texinfo with sections of the following form,

@footnote{This is the first sentence. Here is an introductory clause:
@table @asis @item Object A Some information about Object A. @item
Object B Some Information about Object B. @end table This is the last
sentence.}

This is one continuous line of text. Anything that isn't an @-command,
argument to an @-command, or a brace is arbitrary text.

Neither makeinfo nor tex could process sections like this (makeinfo
version 4.0b and tex version 3.14159, kpathsea 3.3.1, Debian GNU/Hurd,
fwiw).

On the upside, both makeinfo and tex correctly generated the desired
output after hand-editing offending sections to the following form,

@footnote{This is the first sentence. Here is an introductory clause:
@table @asis
@item Object A
Some information about Object A.
@item Object B
Some Information about Object B.
@end table
This is the last sentence.}

For the purposes of filing a bug, should the first sample be considered
syntactically valid texinfo? If so, then I guess this is a bug for the
texinfo maintainers to work on (as makeinfo and tex cannot process it),
and I'll provide more information in case this is the right place for
that. Otherwise I'll contact the maintainers of the sgml to texinfo
converter.

As I do not subscribe to this list, please cc me if you could.

Thanks in advance,
Richard Kreuter
