Is this a bug?  I want @code{@@var} and @code{@@emph} to preserve
the monospacing in an @code{@@example} block, but they don't:

 @i{## unformatted text (monospace)}

 @i{## @@var screws up the spacing}
command emph emph emph@
 @i{## unformatted text (monospace)}
