I don't know _why_ "make distcheck" works differently after
"make maintainer-clean" than after "make distclean".

I also don't know _why_ "make distcheck" works differently in a VPATH build
than from the source directory.

It's the first time I see this. In the few other packages that I use to work
with, I never saw such subtle differences.
