Regarding AM_MAINTAINER_MODE some research will show that it used to
be everywhere thanks to copy-paste cargo-culting but these days it's
pretty much redundant.

You may also want to enable silent rules:
https://autotools.io/automake/silent.html is a good overview.

Actually if you're relatively new to autotools,
https://autotools.io/index.html is very useful.
