but, the stuff is quite old, and IIRC was never fully completed (as far
as that's possible with such a large package as gtk).

If you are looking for a GUI toolkit, then you can give "bb" a try,
a simple library to access FLTK  
(http://www.call-with-current-continuation.org/eggs/bb.html).
