System.in and buffering

Today I looked at merging the Classpath and libgcj System classes.  Is
there a particular reason System.in (and .out and .err) are not
buffered?  The JCL book says that they are by default (this info isn't
in the online docs).  Also I think buffering is important for
performance.

I'm keeping the buffering in the libgcj version.  I just want to know
if there is a reason before applying my patch to the Classpath one.
