Do you have any non-NFS dirs outside of /tmp you can use?  I'm doing
that on a few machines...  Also, I'm not sure exactly what state things
are in now, but a few (6-18?) months back I had things mostly working
with a TESTDIR on NFS mounts to support testing interoperation of
clients and servers on different machines (testing for protocol version
interoperability, case sensitive vs. case insensitive interoperability,
etc.).  It may still mostly work.  Hrm...  I now recall that the most
relevant item was the need to put "acdirmin=0,acdirmax=0" in the NFS
mount options to avoid the NFS-client file/directory existance cache -
don't know if you can do that on your shared machine.

If you have root access, you could always "rm -rf /tmp/{,.}*" before
starting the tests.  ;)
