Unfortunately the error messages aren't very informative. But "X I/O
Error" probably means the connection to the X server was terminated for
some reason.
Do other X11 applications run OK?
Also, 3.3.9 is quite old. 3.3.11 is the latest stable version
(ftp.gnu.org) and there is a new test release 3.3.12-rc1 on
alpha.gnu.org. Try those and see if the problem is still there.
