Thanks Richard for your reply. You're really helping me to grow my 
competence with Denemo which is really useful at this early stage of 
using/learning it.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed that I'd used different slurring in bars 
3 and 5. I was just happy that I managed to get slur and tie to work 
especially as it was accomplished via trial and error. To be honest it 
would probably come down to looks and I prefer the way bar 3 looks over 
bar 5.

Becoming familiar with lyrics is on my to do list. I stumbled on ~ 
(lyric tie) accidentally. If I remember correctly, I used it before 
applying the slur/tie (can't remember which but I think it made a 
difference to the way the words were distributed). Though now when I 
remove the ~ the word distribution doesn't seem to change which is 
probably because the slur/tie is in place. I also have a vague 
recollection that using a ~ inserted by the keyboard didn't work whereas 
inserting it via the menu did (but I need to revisit that). However, I 
can't remember (or find again) how I did it the first time which is one 
of the reasons I want to explore the lyrics more fully.

Other software I've tried allows syllables to be split with - 
(hyphen/minus) whereas that isn't so with Denemo which uses the hyphen 
to join rather than to split. Underscore (_) seems to do the same. 
Personally, I think hyphen looks better than space but I can live with 
space. The only description that I could find of how -_# all worked was 
with the excessive tool tips (which were excessive to the extent that 
they got in the way so I turned them off as soon as I stumbled on how) 
but as I write this I can see that they will be really useful when I 
explore lyrics.

The standard I've seen used most often in type set music is: space to 
split words, hyphen to split syllables and underscore to tie one 
syllable over multiple notes. To be honest, I don't recollect seeing an 
instance of multiple words being joined together with one note (but 
that's probably because, in my experience, each syllable nearly always 
demands its own note).
