In particular if you attach some directive to an object (e.g. a trill to a note) then the first time you click any button such as delete on the trill directive the expander shrinks to hide the buttons. Only after expanding it do you get to actually operate any button. This is made worse by the fact that if it was the delete button you pressed the vanishing of the buttons might lead you to think the directive is deleted.
