I wonder if you had a typo in your sources.list list - e.g. when adding
the backports it would be easy to paste a wrong release name - quite
what would result I'm not sure...

I'm not sure if that is normal or not - did the 1.1.8 have Debian-
specific identifiers after it in the About box? Debian always adds a
further identifier for its build I think.

Yes, it does have new features and bug fixes - I have been very slow to
release since 2.2 and so there are quite a few things in there. At the
moment it is virtually identical with release 2.3 which is just being
released (see the News on the denemo.org site).
