You are probably using the X11 backend. I had the same problem and can't
figure out what the problem is. Try building gnustep-back with the art
backend, that works fine (atleast on my system :)
See the Build Guide (http://gnustep.made-it.com) or the INSTALL file for
further instructions, don't forget to install the art-resources.
