IMHO branches should be used to start new work in parallel with the
development code. Anyway its a matter of
work organisation.

I also tend to use dedicated branches to work on features.

The stash has it's own usefuleness when you want to switch from the branch you're working on but the work is not in a commitable state yet.

For documentation I tend to prefer this book :
