What's to fix? There is already code there to create a mask from transparent parts of a PNG image with transparency.
And for images with an alpha channel, if no :background is specified, the frame background color is used.
In the alpha channel case, it might be better to do this at the time the image is displayed, in order to take faces into account, but that would probably mean a change in the way we cache and reuse images.
