I was using Stefan's example of `str' and `mul'.
Any way you look at it, those alone are not enough
to exclude the gnus etc. stuff.
But `str' and `tiby' give you:
multibyte-string-p
string-as-multibyte
string-make-multibyte
string-to-multibyte
