I don't know... in my 30 years of using Emacs, I never missed anything or
noticed anything as 'this is wrong'. Making the behaviour activated by you patch
opt-in (through customisation, for example) would allow me to see what I was
missing and, eventually, switch to the new behaviour. 

Not that I oppose this, but remember those of us who have grown into the current
behaviour...
