All right, here I am, at last!

In the attached patchset, I address all the problems discussed in this
thread, plus some more I found:

1. Escape double quote characters in results [as discussed]
2. Sort tabular results [to fix flaky tests]
3. Remove half-baked session support [as discussed]
4. Improve documentation strings and commentary [bonus]
