A bit of a tangent here, but when I was still using such a software, I was a big fan of papis (https://github.com/papis/papis).  It's command line, it's slick, and it now has an emacs mode provided by Alejandro Gallo:

Nowadays, I just start my bib's from scratch every time I write something. :-/

Christopher,

Thank you very much. Yeah, obviously copy/pasting Zotero output is a bit impractical, but I'm almost done with my thesis so that will be good enough for the coming weeks, but I'm personally willing to hear more about your system ;)

Cheers,

JC

But the actual workflow is quick and simple. I've come across much more sophisticated approaches to this from other Emacs users, but they looked too complicated for my needs.
