I suppose it's too late for that now, but I would also vote for some
such change in the future. Gentoo uses "-2" to indicate its
own patch level, but there is some ebuild trickery it can use to get
around having "-2" in the package name. I'm using Fedora now, and it
didn't like the "-2" in the package name, either.
