I stumbled across a "debug" capability in Safari (from macosxhints.com):

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

(This didn't actually work for me, however; I had to edit my 
preferences file:
vi ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
add a new key and value:
<key>IncludeDebugMenu</key>
<integer>1</integer>
)

New debug menu appears -- though I don't know that it's going to be 
helpful with debugging.
