I got this.  Ascender and Descender are optional and could either be omitted or even set to zero in AFM, e.g. in the current URW++ base 35 fonts.

The fix is in.

FreeType opens them just fine. There are also afm files. Do we need to attach them to t1? I tried but that messed up the ascender so it seams.
