check 'xftcache' code than.
It exactly scans all directories, and says "Can't find xxxx" if it can't find
some folder with fonts.

Not really.
It seems function you want to find is located in glibc, or other system
libraries, not in freetype.
May be, you should ask <Xpert> (XFree86) list?
